Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

water_for_elephantsI just finished this book, Water for Elephants: A Novel and I have to say it is by far one of my favorite books of all times. I don’t know if the author’s research on circuses is what makes it so intriguing or the fact that the plot revolves around an elderly man who is remembering his past life of working in a circus. It takes place during the depressions era as well as present time. Jacob, an elderly fellow in his 90’s, is excited about the prospect of seeing the circus which was performing next to the nursing home where he lived. Gruen’s characters are so alive and described so that they are easy to picture in your mind.

I think that the fact that my father is now elderly and living in assisted living, helps me to empathize with how he may feel and how he is treated by others. Fortunately in this book, there is an unexpected, happy ending.
