I think the pentominoes are his blueprints or something because when ever they find a clue he always pulls the first letter of the word and after that always find the clue so there kind of like a guideline for Calder and Petra for their case of the Lady Writing

Calder uses pentominoes because they tell him things and when he pulls one out of his pocket, a word pops in his head.
